Religious Education

Our teaching of Religious Education follows the guidance given in the latest Agreed Syllabus for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire and the Church of England's Understanding Christianity project. 

Religious Education (RE) is central to the education offered within a Church of England school. It is a statutory requirement for all schools and an essential academic discipline for all pupils. 

RE enables pupils to become religiously literate, able to engage in balanced, informed and respectful conversations about beliefs, values and world-views. It plays a key role in enabling pupils to flourish by developing spiritually, morally, socially and culturally. 

RE is the academic study of religious and non-religious world-views and reflects the fact that the religious traditions of Great Britain are, in the main, Christian, whilst also taking account of other principal religions. 

In line with the Church of England Statement of Entitlement: 

• At least 50% of RE focuses on Christianity 

• Pupils encounter a range of religions and worldviews 

• RE contributes significantly to the school’s Christian vision 

At Coddington CofE Primary School, RE is a core element of our distinctive Christian character and supports pupils in making sense of the world and their place within it. 

Our intention is to provide a progressive, inclusive and sequential knowledge-rich curriculum that empowers children to grow in independence and confidence.  Religious Education has a significant role in the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.  It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards the diversity of others with different faiths and beliefs.  Pupils are equipped with the knowledge and skills to aid their understanding of different beliefs and practices in our multicultural society.  

Inline with our vision and values, RE at Coddington CofE Primary and Nursery School intends to develop the confidence of pupils to use an enquiry approach, asking and answering challenging questions.  We aim to enable pupils to feel empowered to talk about their own and others' beliefs within an open, safe environment.  All pupils are encouraged to express and listen to ideas and insights into key questions which face all human beings as we travel through life.
